DESCRIPTION OFFICIAL MASTER IN INFECTIOUS DISEASES AND INTERNATIONAL HEALTH

The aims of the Master are to provide students knowledge and skills necessary to identify the main problems caused by infectious diseases, and to formulate and develop research projects and international cooperation in the area of specialty programs. At the end of this course, the student will have achieved general and specific competence that you let guide to diagnosis, treatment and prevention of major infections in community and hospital, including imported infections, through the rational use of methods and techniques.

The course will enable students to achieve specific skills in the identification, diagnosis, prevention and treatment of infectious diseases and international health. This training shall be provided with a professional orientation to aspects related to health care, teaching and research of infectious diseases and health and international cooperation.

PLANNING

The Master’s degree of Infectious Diseases and International Health has a duration of 60 ECTS credits equal to one academic year. Has it been structured into four blocks:

1. A block of (27 ECTS) compulsory subjects which are taught in the first semester of the academic year and includes the following areas:

a) Biological infectious diseases and Antimicrobial therapy bases.
b) Community-acquired Infections.
c) Infections associated with Therapeutic procedures and in Immunocompromised patients.
d) The HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis infection.
e) Emerging and Imported diseases, and the Traveler’s medicine.
f) Research skills in Infectious Diseases and International Health.

2. A second block of electives (9 ECTS) which will be taught in the second semester of the academic year. The student will choose two elective subjects in three lines which may lead to specific mentions of Master’s Degree:

Line of International Health

3. A third block of supervised external internship (10 ECTS) in one of three lines of the Master.

4. A fourth block of a Final Master’s Project (14 ECTS) under the supervision of a professor-director during the second half and that will finish in the public presentation at the end of the academic year.

Teaching will be mixed: face-to-face and on-line. The face-to-face teaching consists of a total of 8 modules during the academic year, which will be held on weekends (Thursday afternoon, Friday morning and afternoon and Saturday morning). Non-contact teaching includes tasks and online forums.

COMPETENCE

General competences
  • The students must demonstrate a systematic competence in the area of Infectious Diseases, and the mastery of skills and methods of research related to Infectious Diseases.
  • The students must demonstrate a systematic competence in the area of International Health, and mastery of the skills and methods of research related to International and Global Health.
  • The students must be able to make proposals on the design and development of research projects in the area of Infectious Diseases and International Health.
  • The students must know the bases on which rests the realization of an original scientific contribution in the area of Infectious Diseases and International Health that extend the frontiers of knowledge developing a substantial corpus of which part deserve publication referenced at national or international level.
  • The students are able to carry out a critical analysis, evaluation and sinntesis of new and complex ideas in Infectious Diseases and International Health.
  • Yhe students must know to communicate with colleagues, with the whole academic community and society in general regarding Infectious Diseases and International Health.
  • The students are supposed to promote, in academic and professional contexts the technological, social and cultural progress in the area of Infectious Diseases and International Health within a knowledge-based society.
Specific competences
  • The students must know how to ask for microbiological tests, interpreting the results of the microbiological diagnostic techniques and study of antimicrobial activity and they must be able to carry out the basic techniques for the diagnosis of Infectious Diseases.
  • The students must demonstrate the ability to use clinically antimicrobial (antibacterial, antifungal, antiparasitic and antiviral drugs) and to design, plan and implement programs for their management in different health care environments.
  • The students must know the accuracy of the main diagnostic tests used in Infectious Diseases and International Health, including microbiological analysis, biochemical and radiological analysis tests, and their conditions of use.
  • students must demonstrate competence in the area of Clinical Infectious Diseases, and the mastery of the skills and methods of care work related to infections acquired in the community and acquire basic skills to get started in research tasks.
  • The students must demonstrate competence in the area of Clinical Infectious Diseases, and the mastery of the skills and methods of care work and research related to infections associated with medical and surgical procedures and acquire the basic skills to get started in research tasks.
  • Students must acquire competence in the area of chronic infections caused by viruses and the mastery of the skills and methods of care work related to HIV and hepatitis virus infections and acquire basic skills to get started in research tasks.
  • Students must demonstrate competence in the area of infections associated with alterations in the defensive systems of the organism, and the mastery of the skills and methods of care work related infections in immunocompromised patients, and acquire the basic skills to get started in research tasks.
  • The students must be able to identify the main signs and symptoms of presentation of native and imported, Infectious Diseases both in the normal host and guest immunosuppressed, in their different locations.
  • The students must demonstrate competence in the area of International Health, and mastery of the skills and methods of care work related to imported and emerging diseases, and acquire the basic skills to get started in research tasks.
  • Students must demonstrate competence in the area of the Traveler Health and Care for the immigrant population, and mastery of the skills and methods of care work related to the health problems of the traveller, and acquire the basic skills to get started in research tasks.
  • The students must be able to proceed correctly before the main syndromes in Infectious Pathology and different situations raised in immigrant populations and travellers attention.
  • That students must acquire the ability to handle the tools of epidemiology and Public Health related to Infectious Diseases and International Health.
  • The students must acquire the ability to gain access to the scientific literature, data bases, documentary sources and existing Infectious Diseases and International Health high-level information.

ACCES AND ADMISSION

Acces

The RD 8612010, of 2 July, amending RD 13932007, of 29 October, establishes in its article 16:
To access the official Master teachings it will be needed to be in possession of an official Spanish university degree, or one issued by a higher education institution belonging to another State member of the European Union of higher education entitling to the teachings of Master access.

In addition, acced graduates according to educational systems outside the European Union of higher education without the approval of their titles, subject to verification by the University that those credited a level of education equal to the corresponding official Spanish university degree and that authorize the country issuing the title access to postgraduate teachings. Access by this way does not imply, in any case, the approval of the previous title that is in possession, the person concerned, or his recognition to other effects than the study the teachings of Master.

Admission

For the admission of students will be assessed:
– Adequacy of the qualification to the areas of knowledge of the Master.
– Personal academic record.
– Curriculum vitae.
– Scientist-professional activities that suit the curriculum proposed in the Master.
– Preference for one route or the other within the Master.

For the admission process will be handled first, a pre-registration in the Master’s Degree, both in June and in September. Admission and potential selection will take place according to the above aspects, the Commission’s admission of students.

At the time of enrolment plus the student, he/she will establish an order of preference among the itineraries, in such a way that there is an adequate distribution of enrolment among the itineraries, which should oscillate within the range 35-65, aspect that will be resolved by the Committee on the admission of students.
